Course Description
Earth Science, S1 is a laboratory course that explores the origins and connections between the physical, chemical, and biological processes of the earth system. Students are introduced to the four branches of Earth Science: geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. In this first semester, the instructional focus is on geology and oceanography. Through direct instruction videos, vocabulary activities and lab demonstrations, students will learn about mapping the earth, minerals, rocks, earth’s energy resources, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering, erosion, deposition, and the geologic time scale. Students will also learn about freshwater, ocean motions, and ocean zones. Student understanding will be assessed through interactive lab exercises, quizzes, and tests. The online course also includes audio resources that can "read" content to students along with 17 different language translation options. This course is taught by a South Dakota based teacher.
